Spring Plant Care 101
Warm, sunny weather has finally come to Cookeville. Granted, “April showers” have also made themselves at home, but I will absolutely take a handful of thunderstorms if it means chasing away any lingering “winter-blues” in the remaining days. It’s been fun to see everyone shaking the dust off of their spring clothes and getting out of the house to walk around the West Side. People seem lighter, more care-free this week. (Me included.) Spring is called the season of new beginnings for a reason, and it shows.
You’ve likely noticed your green friends (AKA your plants) also beginning to perk up. Maybe there’s a new leaf or two, or some length on the vines that wasn’t there a week ago. Extended hours of sunlight with higher humidity means it’s finally growing season, baby! All winter I’ve been having to deliver our practiced spiel to everyone coming to the shop with a plant and dream to repot…“Well, if your plant is not root bound or rotting in this pot, it’s probably better to wait until the spring. We aren’t currently in a growing season, and it might shock and hurt your plant…” But the spiel is done! This is the perfect time to jump on any and all plant chores you’ve needed to put off in the colder months. Spring cleaning is not only something your home needs; your plants want a refresh too.
“Repotting a Plant”
Featuring Morgan and Erika sporting overalls from this capsule collection (we still have some…)
Now, I’m absolutely not suggesting you simply must repot every single one of your plants for the fun of it. That is a huge commitment of time and energy, and it likely is not necessary. What I am telling you is that it’s time to go through all of your plant friends and get a status update. Do you have a someone that hasn’t had new soil in a couple of years? It would be a great time to give it some fresh, nutrient-rich houseplant soil. Are your leaves dusty? Go through and wipe them down with a leaf shine and pest preventative. (We use Leaf Wellness here at the shop, and swear by it. It’s easy to use, and lasts a long time.) You might hit them all with a bit of fertilizer to give them a boost as well! Of course, if you do have some that are super root bound (And don’t like to be that way, I’m not looking at you, snake plants.) this would be a great time for a new pot around 1-2 inches bigger than their current home. We want upgrades, but not too much bigger. We don’t wanna overwhelm the friend, and despite sounding goofy, it is possible.
This is probably the perfect time to remind you that you do not have to be alone in this endeavor. We are ready to help with all your spring refresh needs over here at Glass Tangerine. For a repotting fee of $20 per plant, (there are exceptions if it’s super tiny or huge) we will take care of the whole process for you. We’ll use our in-house soil, fertilizer, leaf shine, and everything else to get your plants looking happy and healthy this spring.
Some of our plant care selection…
When you bring us a plant, we run a full diagnostic. We’re going to make sure it’s not sick, has no pests, and is happy in its current environment. Basically, for $20, your plant gets its yearly checkup. So if you’re like me, and the idea of going and buying all the necessary supplies for a repot and then doing it at home is deeply overwhelming, let us do it. We love it. But if you do want to do it yourself, we also have all the supplies you need here at GT. Basically, come see us either way; we’d love to sit and chat with you.
Alright, consider this your rallying cry: it’s time for some plant care.
