New Plant Parents Welcome!

“What would you give to someone that kills everything they’ve ever tried to grow?”

This is the question we get at the shop on an almost daily basis, often multiple times a day. Becoming a plant parent can be daunting when you’re trying to start! I know it was for me. I had only ever had three plants prior to starting at Glass Tangerine: a succulent in a Walmart pot on my dorm room window sill, a dying aloe plant, and a snake plant. Even in my interview with Emma, I was totally honest about my lack of knowledge, and even though she could have said I was too far behind what she needed in an employee, she said I could learn.

Let me be your friend here. Being a plant parent is not the awful task it can seem. Start where I did. Get a snake plant. (Or a ZZ plant) Low light in your room? Snake plant. High light? Snake plant. These pointy friends thrive on neglect. Even the most forgetful of potential plant parents can’t kill them; they only need water once a month! I have quite literally seen snake plants that go untouched in a dorm room for eight months continue to happily hold their own.

A snake plant was the first plant I kept alive, and it seriously gave me the confidence to buy another plant. It can definitely feel overwhelming to think of trying to keep something that can’t talk alive, but luckily for you, you’re a proud member of the GT community. That means you have a ready-to-go resource for all the help you need to start your plant journey. Even if you aren’t local to Cookeville, email us! Comment on the blog you’re currently reading! We want to help you figure out how to have plants, and we welcome questions. Stop falling for the lie that you “could never,” and start saying you can! (And should, plants bring so much life to a space.)

So, welcome beginner plant parents. Let us help you get started. Our slogan would not be, “Buy Plants, Be Happy” if we didn’t believe it.
