Girl Construction - The Finale

Twelve hours. Twelve hours of sweating, lifting, styling, restyling, and problem-solving is what it takes a team of six women to put together an entire store in one day. Maybe our constant store-flipping in the old space prepped us for the absolute gauntlet that was putting it together.

When we arrived to our new home at 48 W Broad Street on Friday, we had no thoughts of being open on Saturday. I mean how would that even be possible? I had already told Isaac I would probably be home with him most of the day Saturday, because there was no way we were going to be done. We all showed up at 9am with coffee and a dream. We were going to work as hard as we could to get Glass Tangerine put together, and like a true well-oiled machine, we did.

There is something magical about a group of women that have worked together enough to simply, “do it.” As soon as a project was identified, someone was on it. No lengthy explanations needed and no micromanaging required. Grow lights got installed on our shelves; new merchandise was unboxed and displayed and the trash taken away. Everyone inherently knew how to do their jobs. I think it was around the time that we broke for lunch (Thank you, Emma, for pizza.) that someone said, “Guys, I think we might be able to open tomorrow.”

I think I laughed. Genuinely, I did not believe it was possible. There were plants all over the floor, furniture still hadn’t found it’s home; it was a complete mess! But some of the other girls agreed that we could do it. We can open, so we went back to work. And slowly, I, along with anyone following our Instagram stories, saw a space coming to life in front of my eyes.

At 8:30, Bobbie and Emma finished the final touches on the garden section. Erika and I left around 45 minutes earlier to go home and rest before getting up for work the next day, because by 6:30 that evening, we knew Glass Tangerine would be open the next morning. The feeling of standing in the nearly finished space can’t be accurately described. We could not believe we had done it. Honestly, even now, as I sit behind the checkout counter writing this post, I still don’t fully believe it. To look around and see all of our hard work paying off is incredible. We built this wall, installed the arch, hung this wallpaper…it makes me want to go home and start my own renovation project! (Don’t worry, Isaac, I won’t.)

If this post communicates anything to you, let it be this: you are so capable of big things. If a team of women with no degrees pertaining to anything to do with construction can put a store together, so can you. We watch YouTube videos, and we mess up a lot! Mistakes just teach us the better way to do it. Power tools are a little scary, but they are not as difficult as you tell yourself! We live in an age where information is so accessible that we have got to stop making excuses for why we can’t do that major project, and start thinking how we can make it happen. Girl construction for the win!

As always, we love you guys. I hope you come by and see the new shop, and maybe get inspired for a remodel of your own home… ;) Leave us a comment telling us what project you want to tackle, or what you want to hear more about!
